back from the beach, worldwide festival 2011 in sète has been great, a little rewind in this weeks show wih rainer trueby on the mic as well, thanks to gilles p and all organizers of what has to be one the best festivals in the world. shouts to everyone i met down there in the sunshine, you know who you are ! see you again next year! space mobile travels 2012.
and another r.i.p. tribute mix had to be done, i said it before - i am not really lookin forward to doing these selections because that always means that a great artist has left the earth - fonce mizell died july 5th in california and left us with some of the most positive vibes in jazz and soul music. together with his brother larry mizell he brought the soul to jazzmusic and created a very own sound which has been highly influential ever since to many of the musicians played on this show week by week. the mizell trademark sound and productions added this special flavour to the outstanding music by the likes of donald byrd, rance allen group, bobbi humphrey, l.t.d. and of course johnny hammond to name but a few, who had the chance to work with with fonce mizell and get that magic touch within their albums. here is a little selection of tunes that i love and which always bring a smile to my face and ears. thanks a lot for this, mr. mizell and your music and visions were made for heaven anyway . . . goodbye and rest in peace.
enjoy the music.

the boys are back in europe. the boys are back in town. radio. on the bus , on the road . on stage.
talking about Fat Freddys Drop Road To Europe Tour 2011!
jamming like no others, providing us with the all over good vibes straight out of Wellington, Aotearoa.
about time for the return of the road trip edition, remember last years words & music special?
this time i have asked dr. boondiiga & the big b.w. if the fat freddys can do something special directly from their nightliner ride through the uk, netherlands & portugal before the touch down here in germany to play frankfurt, munich and berlin. and yes, they did. or better: the one and only MC Slave did it, getting members of the crew on the mic to select a few tunes for soulsearching. the mobile ffd recording studio in action for over 60 minutes full of mostly unheard pieces and some exclusives out of the travel cases. a warm welcome back in frankfurt and on the soulsearching airwaves, ladies and gentleman, this sound is original, this is the drop ! thanks and shouts to Mark MC Slave and the crew for doin this !
warming up before their selection with a few back in time moments, riding the musical waves again as i 've been digging through tons of records at fleamarkets in amsterdam a few weeks back plus a brandnew tune by Recloose,
Matt Chicoine, who was the one responsible startin the buzz almost over 10 years ago by bringin over a handful 12inches of "midnight marauders" original pressing to daniel best who gave me my copy . . . the rest is history.
so i am looking very much forward to hangin out with the new zealand crew again this monday here in frankfurt/offenbach before playing a warm up set until FFD will hit the stage. 27th that is. more info: www.fatfreddysdrop.com and check out the tv channel also....
enjoy the music.

Dear Gil Scott-Heron - the revolution will still not be televised, but it's happening
step by step, with loads of help by your words & encouragement, so it did back in the 70 & 80s, so it will be happening in the near future. you've been not "new here" in 2010 when you came back with all your blues and lyrics that still can't find equivalents among musicians and poets today. your unique voice, your lyrics, your music and yourself as a man with a true sense of humour in between your strong political work and views will be sorely missed, but your memory lives on through your music.
thank you for always standing up and strong to yourself,
so now may you find your peace somewhere in heaven,
maybe sit down next to Robert Johnson . . .
until we meet up there,
peace go with you brother.

words:
a bit of a different vibe this week, just music that came to my mind when Bing Ji Lings fine mix arrived out of New York,
spontaneous selection, into the spring summer mood. Including an exclusive airing of Fat Freddys Drop recorded live at legendary
show last August in Cologne. Thanks to The Drop and RBMRA for sending this over.
Check Bing Ji Lings album "Shadow To Shine" via Tummy Touch & Lovemonk Records, it's special. Looking forward to his liveshows and DJing sometime soon in Europe...he is also accompanied by his buddy Tommy Guerrero on this album, in return he is playing in his band since many years.
next week more new bits and pieces out of the box....
enjoy the music.
